Bio

Dr. Lin Clegg received her Doctor of Philosophy in Biostatistics in May 1997, from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She received her Master of Science in Textile Engineering from China National Textile University. Over the years, Dr. Clegg has been working with cancer survival data and tissue microarrays, and developed methodologies to analyze these types of data. In addition to joining the Department of Biostatistics, Dr. Clegg currently serves as a Senior Mathematical Statistician at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. She has recently been appointed as an Adjunct Professor of Biostatistics.

Bio

Dr. Tractenberg is an assistant professor in the Department of Neurology, with secondary appointments in Biostatistics, Bioinformatics & Biomathematics and Psychiatry, in the Georgetown University School of Medicine. She has authored or co-authored nearly 50 peer-reviewed papers/chapters/articles on research methodologies, outcomes, and analytic methods, and also has an active research program in the scholarship of teaching and learning. She was named Editor for Science and Technology for the online journal Academic Intersections when it was founded in 2006, and in 2008 was named to the Associate Editorial Board for the journal Contemporary Clinical Trials, with specific responsibility for articles on “Protocols and Statistical Design”. She oversaw biostatistical analysis and experimental design for the Georgetown General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) 2003-2006 as the Consulting Biostatistician, and is currently the Director of the Curriculum for the NCRR-funded DC Consortium for Clinical Training Research (2005-2010). Dr. Tractenberg has a five-year K01 mentored training grant (2006-2011) from NIA to study latent variable modeling and neuropsychology in aging. Named an Apple Distinguished Educator in 2004, she is a member of the Faculty Development Committee, where she chaired the Subcommittee on the Teaching Portfolio (2005-06) and currently co-chairs the Subcommittee on Teaching and Pedagogy for the Faculty Development Committee. Her areas of interest include statistical methodology and pedagogy in statistics, as well as neuropsychological instrumentation, identification of outcomes, experimental design, and longitudinal analytic methodologies, particularly latent variable methods. Prior to coming to Georgetown, Dr. Tractenberg spent five years at the University of California at San Diego as a biostatistician and scientist within a national consortium of Alzheimer's disease research centers.

Research Interests

My main interests in terms of cognitive neuroscience are a) understanding how symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease (e.g., behavioural disturbance, cognitive decline, sleep disturbance) can be accurately ‘measured’ and what, in the brain, these symptoms actually reflect; and b) understanding how inaccuracies in these measurements affect statistical modeling and by extension, our conceptualization of the symptoms themselves. In terms of statistical modeling, I am interested in how latent variable modeling techniques can improve the power, efficiency, and interpretability of clinical and translational research. Since 2007 I have been working on latent variable modeling of hypertension, emphasizing animal models and how results from this approach can be translated to models of hypertension in humans. In terms of cognitive science, I am interested in modeling executive function, which basically controls cognitive functions like attention and memory. Executive function likely has an important role in health literacy, which is another research area of mine. I am also very interested in the graduate student experience, how to teach or at least encourage creativity and metacognition, and assessment in the postgraduate setting.

Research Summary: I have three main research trajectories: 1. measurement in neuropsychology (e.g., what we think we’re measuring and how to find out if we are right) and how assumptions affect statistical modeling of neuropsychological phenomena such as ‘cognitive decline’ and ‘behavioural disturbance’; 2. developing a model of sleep disturbance and depression in elderly persons with and without Alzheimer’s disease; and 3. understanding how causal models and latent variable models and methods can be used defensibly and efficiently in clinical and translational research. My research is mainly methodological: I am interested in how and why we measure certain aspects of important cognitive, behavioural, and symptom-specific domains, and the sources of error in these measurements. Eventually, I want to bring this knowledge to a study of the neurophysiologic origins of our measurements, that is, how what we measure is reflected in the brain and its activity. Similarly, by performing item-level analyses of the associations between symptoms of sleep and mood disturbance, with my colleagues I hope to develop a framework for a better understanding of their relationships and their underlying neurophysiology; this will be accomplished with latent variable models.

Teaching

Dr. Tractenberg helped to re-design the introductory biostatistics course that was mandated for GU graduate students in the School of Medicine in 2004, and has taught introductory biostatistics at GU to graduate students and at the FDA to Scientific Leadership Program participants. She is the course director for Introductory Biostatistics (BIST 500-01) and Issues and Considerations in Experimental Design (BIST 500-2) and has developed a course on outcomes (BIST 507) to be offered in Spring semesters starting in 2009. Professor Tractenberg helped design the curriculum for the DC Clinical Research Training Consortium (the curriculum which she Directs), consults with faculty in the analysis and interpretation of test scores, and will offer a workshop at the Teaching, Learning and Innovations Summer Institute that focuses on item and test score analysis and interpretation.
